trying to figure out how to open .bns files on my OSX 10.5.8 any suggestions?

Not a common one.
http://www.filesuffix.com/extension/bns.html

Might be XML, try dropping it on TextEdit and see if its plain text or binary.

ok looks like it's a pdf.

Finder > File > Get Info on the file, change its extension to pdf and see what preview has to say when you open it.

If it's a Form you will need Adobe PDF Reader, but when you install that make sure you don't let it become the default reader, Preview is heaps faster and better!
