Apps won't open

This is sort of odd, but occasionally an app refuses to open. Seen this a few times with MS Word. You click on it, and NOTHING happens. You click on a Word document, and NOTHING happens. Force quitting Finder doesn't help. I have to reboot to make it work.

What makes this happen, and it there an easier way to fix it than rebooting?

Hello,

Proabably because it is a Microsoft product. ;)

All kidding aside, I have seen this if the Office/Word install gets corrupted, or needs an update.

-Which OS X/macOS version?
-Which version of Office/Word?
