My airport appears to be connected but it tells my in Network Preference that AirPort does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the Internet. I tried to renew DHCP Lease but nothing happened. I'm at a college and everyone else's macs work fine but mine and my ethernet cable connection works fine too.

Yes, WiFi has to be connected to a WiFi base-station or Router. It shows you which one it is connected to by a tick (✓)

On my display in the top right corner the wifi symbol is lite up. But in Network it is not and says not connected.

The "Lite up" is just saying your WiFi is working not that you are connected to the network, which you obviously aren't.
To connect to a Wifi network you must select it from the WiFi menu, when you are connected it will have a Tick beside it.
