Since the introduction of APFS as the modern standard filing system. Apple has depreciated the AFP (Apple Filing Protocol) and with MacOS v.27 removed support completely. This is bad news for all of us Time Capsule owners. They're no longer recognized as viable destinations in Time Machine.

While I'll agree that the AirPort Time Capsule is extremely outdated as a wifi router, but, as a network backup (hardwired through the gigabit port) they still have use as a network backup device for your trusty Mac computers. Although this is not relevant to Macs running an OS prior to Golden Gate, for users such as I, it's a fist punch to the face.

Apple dropped out of the router game in '19 and the Airport devices don't have the ability to run SMB (currently still supported in Time Machine) and with the introduction if Golden Gate we're screwed (NOT). Luckily there's a GITHub project that can remedy this. It installs SMB protocol on the Time Capsule and brings it back from the dead. If you have a V4 of the time capsule (tall skinny one) then it's pretty flawless.

Thanks to James Chang for giving this useful device back to us.

Here's proof it works:
