Using 27 inch iMac as TV monitor

Seeking technical advice about connecting Spectrum cable box to 2016 iMac to watch digital cable. Purchased HDMI to thunderbolt adaptor to attach cable box directly to iMac. Will this be possible or is there something else required to receive signal from cable box?

Hello and welcome.

Due to High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), you probably won't get a signal on your Mac, as it prevents recording digital content.
