Transparent boxes overlay on screen.

Hi,
I have transparent boxes that have appeared on my mac screen, and won't go away! any ideas?

They overlay on all application screens, but disappear when I open launchpad. I've tried shutting down and restarting, but no luck...

Hello and welcome.

-Which version of OS X?
-You could try closing all of the Dashboard widgets, restart, and see if the issue is resolved. Then, add one widget at a time, until you find the culprits.

There was a trick (10.4-10.8) to detach widgets from the Dashboard and put them back, but it depends on your version of OS X and your function key assignments: Putting “widgets” on Mac desktop.
