Time machine

I had saved my photos to a separate hard drive.
I bought a Mac laptop and decided to use this drive as my backup for time machine.
I saved all the photos to the laptop and assumed that they would then be backed up in time machine.
I then deleted the photos on my laptop.
Now I am trying to retreive some photos, but can not find them.
Any help will be appreciated.

When you transferred the photos to the laptop they would then have been on both laptop & ext HD. Where on the laptop were the photos? Did you check they were copied over properly? Did you run Time Machine to back up the contents of the laptop?

I finally figured out how to retrieve my pictures.
They were in pictures aperture library in my first backup. Thanks for your help. You triggered my brain in the right direction.
