Started looking around to install Facebook, but didn't see anything that looked appropriate in Apps. Did a search and found a confusing variety of downloads. Would appreciate some advice. Thank you.

On your MB Pro just use the webpage, there aren't any apps for desktop or laptops just for mobile devices like phones/tablets etc. The Instant Messaging app Messenger is built into the webpage too. If you google Facebook you will find it straight away.

I'll scrutinize the webpages a bit closer and see if the most appropriate download becomes more obvious. Thanks for you info.

Hello and welcome.
I agree with Spawn_Dooley's suggestion. Simply using the Facebook website in a browser is the only official Facebook access on a Mac. All of the apps you will see in the App Store and on the Internet are made by third-party companies, not Facebook. The Facebook app for iOS devices IS an official Facebook, Inc. app.
