Need help with Messages!!

I need help please!! I don't know what happened, but I was able to receive iMessages (texts) from everyone (including non-mac people ) and now I can't. How to reset AIM name? Or is there another way besides AIM? I didn't know I had an AIM name and password in the first place. Is there some way to just erase it and set it up over?? Thank you so much!!!

-Which app on your Mac - Messages?
-Are you using an actual AIM account, or your iCloud account?
-What version of Mac OS X?

Yes Messages: I had both AIM & iCloud but I unchecked (enabled) the AIM account so there would just be one.: I think Mavericks (is that what you mean, the version?). For some reason I can't get my phone # to be there either. It doesn't send or receive. My phone works fine. ty
