mac wont turn OFF?

i dont know what the deal is but everytime i need to restart or shut down my computer it just stays at the blank blue screen with the loading spiral. when i have to update the software or something and i am told to restart the comp i have to hold down the power button to completely turn it off but the updates seem to work. anyone know whats going on?

Maybe your (file)system is corrupt? Have you done a cleanup with OnyX? What about S.M.A.R.T status, and everything else you can dig out?

i got the onyx program and tried everything u said but nothing so far, if i were to reinstall osx would that work cuz ive been planning on doing that anyway thx for the post
