iPad won't start

I recently bought a refurbished 1st generation iPad. I charged its battery and when the on/off or home screen buttons were pressed a USB icon, an arrow and an itunes icon appeared for < 10 secs a battery icon also appeared. Attempts to reset by pressing both on/off plus home screen buttons for various times got the power off slide and the apple icon - then nothing!

Thanks Cory. Its fixed. I didn’t realise the importance of itunes. It runs perfectly. Its my wife’s and she only wants it for mail and simple safari stuff, without the clutter.
