Just found I am having a problem with DVD Player. When I insert a disk (either burned or bought) the DVD player starts up, and then reports an Initialization Error, and an error code of "NilP".

VLC has no problems playing DVDs.

DVD Player version is 4.6.5
OS version is 10.4.7

Hi there and welcome !

do you know if you have set the region yet ?

Can you try and throw away...

This file com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist file in your Home > Library > Preferences folder.

This file is the preferences file for DVD Player.

You can also try running "Repair Permissions" (Disk Utility--Applications-->Utilites) and then a reboot...

Give these a go, and let us know how you get on...

Don't remember changing it at all. So I assume its still set for North America.

Yes....and no joy. Still that the "NilP" error.

It's a 2.1 GHz 20" iMac G5, less than a year old. And yes, it has worked before. I just don't use this machine to play DVD's very often.

Hi there,

good, so if the DVD player works in a new user account, that means that an 'element' of the DVD Player (Application, Framework or prefs) in your account is corrupt.

So you really need to do an Archive and Install, this will put a new system on your Mac which should then work !

Make sure you backup any important files, just in case.

If you are not sure how to do an Archive and Install let us know.

Before doing it you can delete the 'extra' user account you created.

Go

Before doing an Archive & Install, you could try downloading and re-applying the 10.4.7 Combo Updater.

Sometimes that can be magic...

C

P.S. In the About DVD Player window, what does the Framework Version show as - 4.6.8?

Well, I tried the 10.4.7 updater, and that just changed the failure - it was failing during start-up, and not giving me an init failure notice.

Then I had a brainstorm - I turned off Shapeshifter and now it works.

Well, what do you know...

Good old Shapeshifter...

Surprising how many things that can affect !

Glad you got it working !
