I am on an early Mac Pro (MacPro3.1) running 10.5.4 specifically for an older application.
I now need to re-install the OS as the USB connections do not work with USB sticks. They do work for mouse though.
Guessing that this is an OS problem so need to re-install.
Question is, can I connect to wifi or must I hard wire in with LAN?
Cheers

Hello and welcome.

I assume you mean that USB drives don't mount? You can perform two resets to see if that functionality returns:

-How to reset the SMC of your Mac
-Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac

If the USB drive does mount in Finder, it may be the way you created the macOS installer on the USB drive. You can reinstall via Wi-Fi, but you may not need to perform the reinstall, as those resets may fix the issue.

Let us know.
