Hi I'm currently in a class in school which requires me to film and upload onto their computers... I've been using my own camera its a Panasonic VDR-M50 and the computer hasn't been able to detect the camera, the teacher tells me I have to find a patch that can enable imovie 4 to identify usb 2 so if anyone could help me that'd be great, thx...

iMovie 4 cannot communicate with devices via USB/USB2, only FireWire.
You'll need some other way of connecting the camera to a FireWire input device or transferring the media files into iMovie.
