underlying disk reported failure on exit

MAC book Pro G4
OS X 10.4

Own a WD Passport..now lost access to it. I did Disk Utility (Repair) and err message was "the underlying reported failure on exit" . Formatting is not an option because I cannot lose all my files. What other options do I have to fix this without losing files?
