system upgrade

I recently purchased a ipod nano for my daughter and when i came to load the software on my mac (looks like a lamp base with a screen) the sortware woudn't run on the system software 10.2.4. So I went on the apple website and downloaded the system upgrade to 10.2.8 which would run the software.
Having completed down loading the software the mac then asks to shut down and reboot.... The mac will no longer run and I get a blank blue screen and I can't even boot the thing from the system disc. How do I get my mac back.

Did you hold down the c key when trying to boot off the system disk ?

Or would it just not recognize the disk ?

Yes I did hold down the C Key whilst trying to run up the system disc. The boot screen apears and progress bar moves about a quarter of the way along and then stops

OK try rebooting holding the shift key down...this will do a "Safe Boot"
