SLOW iBook

A friend of mine handed me down her iBook once she got a new MacBook. I am surprised at how S...L...O...W it is. It seems to take FOREVER to do anything. It has OS 10. Is there anything I can do to make it faster? Software to buy? I don't have a ton of money for repairs (hence the hand-me-down) as a college student. Is it worth trying to fix it or should I start saving?

Hi, for starters I'd suggest adding RAM if this hasn't been done already.
