Please help: Some ancient Macintos files that I just cannot read

    Hi,

A friend of mine passed me a diskette that she had from one her
professors at her university. She said that the files in the diskette
were created years ago on a Mac computer and now they cannot read the
files on PC. She said her professor needs that files but they just
couldn't handle it. She doesn't know with which word processing
program those files were prepared and she also doesn't know which kind
    of Mac computer it was.

I took a look at the files but they look like binary so I could not
come to a conclusion, I even cannot say which program must be used (on
PC) to view or convert them (into a readable format).

Here is the content of the old diskette (nearly 1 MB, compressed):

    http://ileriseviye.org/stuff/mac.zip

If you can take a look and direct me in the correct direction I (and
my friend) would be very happy.

PS: If you can view the files don't be surprised, they are in Turkish,
I don't expect you to understand them.

    Thanks in advance

At a quick glance, they look like Microsoft Word files inside MacBinary
containers. Try making a copy of one, adding '.bin' to the end and
seeing if StuffIt or StuffIt Expander will give it the time of day.

    Hi,

I tried to look at the files but I think you had better compress
them using STUFFIT or some other tool that preserves the resource
fork. I checked with ResEdit and the unpacked files don't have the
resource fork and with the old WordProcessor programs you probably
need that. I would be happy to look at the files. I have MacWrite Pro
here which can read the MacWrite II and MacWrite pro type files. Also
I can get the files to the even older MacWrite program. You might try
to down load ResEdit (it's a Classic app
    http://www.resexcellence.com/support_files/resedit.shtml) and then do
a get INFO on the files with it. There is TYPE and Creator and they
could tell which APP created them.

At least *some* of them are Microsoft Word files. Examining the files in
a text editor, early in the file the ones I am talking about have
WDBNMSWD as part of the text; that's what tells me those are Microsoft
Word files. Others don't say WDBNMSWD early in the file, and those
*aren't* Word files; I don't know what they are.

Try opening them in Microsoft Word, preferably as old a copy as you can
find. Change the name of the file so that it ends in ".doc" first, else
your Windows machine isn't going to realize they are Microsoft Word
files. If the files are in Turkish and a special font was used and an
equivalent font isn't installed, they aren't going to make much sense
    when exhibited using another font.

I don't think even ancient MS Word files had resource forks, so the
comment another respondent made about resource forks being killed when
the files are zipped should be ignored. Zipping a file *will* kill
resource forks, but if the file doesn't have one in the first place,
    this won't matter.

Here is the directory listing of uncompressed files. You can take a
look at them as single files, not compressed. Just fire your browser
    and for example type:

    http://ileriseviye.org/stuff/mac/TIBBYE-&/MECLS-I&

and save the file and check if you can interpret its contents.

I've sent the addresses for the uncompressed files in my reply to
Gregory Weston, you can see it there and check it out for yourself.
They are all the files I've found in the diskette given to me.

I don't have a Mac here and as far as I can see thet ResEdit is a Mac
utility so I still desperately need help :)

If only I had a way to convert these files to some MS Windows Word or
some other modern word processing program (or OpenOffice.org) I'd be
    more than happy.
