network printing problem

I'm trying to print through a network to another computer in my home, but I can't ever get my macbook to connect to it properly. I've tried everything I can think of, and I still can't seem to get it to work.

Is it a wired or wireless network? I actually gave up trying to work out how to successfully print from my iMac to a printer connected to a Windows PC and found it easier to print from the PC to the printer when it was connected to my iMac ... sorry if that is no help to you but I've seen many threads about this topic and it's very hard to troubleshoot unless you are there .... is your set-up flexible?
