I used to have 3x3 grid on snowleopard.
Is there a way to have anything but a single giant line of 9 spaces on
    Lion?
    tnx

Evidently not. This has been a complaint from several people. Post
    feedback to Apple: <http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html>

They might fix it, but don't hold your breath.

There is a fundamental difference between how spaces were managed in
Snow Leopard and how desktops are managed in Lion. With spaces one
assigned an application to a particular space and when that application
was opened it opened in the assigned space. With desktops when an
application is opened it will be assigned to the desktop that was
active at the time of the opening. An opened application can be moved
    to another desktop if desired.

Like many things the desktops in Lion take a bit of getting used to,
but in my case I quickly found myself preferring desktops to spaces.

Although I had sixteen spaces I find that only six desktops seem to
    serve me to my; satisfaction.
