Intermittent faint black vertical lines on my screen

A few times now, I've noticed nine faintish vertical lines on the
screen of my Macbook Pro, starting atbout three-quarters of an inch
wide at the bottom of the screen and tapering off to about three-
quarters of the way up. A reboot makes them disappear, but they do
appear again on other occasions. Obviously, compared to some problems
this is small and I could live with it if I had to, but does that mean
my screen is on its way out? What might be causing it?
