If you ever have a problem with your keyboard, and some or all of the keys don't work, you can activate the "Keyboard Viewer" in the system preferences, pics as below.
This will then allow you to click on any of the keys using your mouse and that character will be entered...set your system prefs as below and then activate the "Keyboard Viewer" activate a tect box somewhere (the address bar url for example) and click a few characters on the "keyboard Viewer".
You can also use it to find where those special characters are, just like System 9's Key caps program ! Try holding down the shift, option or command key...it will show you how to access chareacters such as © ç # ‰ Ô ?
You can also activate the "Character Palette" via the same system preferences as before. A quick way of finding and storing special characters that you may need !
