Help! My ipod won't mount in itunes

My ipod shows up on the desktop, but will not show up in itunes, so I can't use it in itunes. I have mac os x 10.2.8. I've got itunes 6.0.5 (the latest update for 10.2.8) I've tried resetting the ipod, restarting the mac, and re-installing itunes....and none of this works. Please help.
