Hard Drive Crash & Backup Restore problem

The HD in my two year-old Intel iMac crashed (while my crashed Classic iPod was being replaced by Apple). Thus losing all my data (and iTunes Library!). I got the HD replaced. Re-installed OS10.4.x. Re-installed my .Mac Backup v3.0 software. However, I have lost all my scheduled backups (of course). I backed up my Home folder to an external drive (monthly) and personal settings to iDisk (daily). Any Mac gurus out there know how I can restore from my backup files. When I attempt to restore a backup file, it scans the files for a few seconds and then the restore fails. Pretty frustrating as I bothered to do all these backups! Can anyone help? :confused:
