Files in Mac desktop are now copied inside every folder and can’t delete. Help with troubleshooting please

So, a coworker used my MacBook yesterday. When I turned it on today, it was a mess. All the files and folders in my desktop are now also inside every folder in the desktop.

So every folder in the desktop has inside it all the folders and files in the desktop. If I delete any of the repeated files inside a folder, it also gets deleted from the desktop.

What happened and how can I resolve it? Thank you very much!

-Which version of OS X/macOS?

Sounds like a strange issue. Any way of getting a photo to clarify the issue? Do any of the folders have the little alias triangle on them on the lower left corner?

Thank you. The problem seems to have resolved by itself. No idea what happened. It is a MacBook Air from mid 2012, macOS Mojave
