when i plug my external hard drive (lacie, firewire) in the logo doesn't appear on the desktop. it can be seen in disk utilities, when i try to repair it, it replies:

Repairing disk for “LACIE”
** /dev/disk2s9
** Phase 1 - Read FAT
Unable to read FAT (Input/output error)
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)

Repair attempted on 1 volume
0 HFS volumes repaired
1 volume could not be repaired

i've treated it well, why oh why would it to do this to me?
please help everything is stored in that precious box
any ideas at all about what i should do, any at all would be great
the only thing i can think to do is swear at it

it gets worst and worst

now it doesn't even appear in disk utilities
maybe it's my computer and not the external drive causing the problem?

thank you bluekatt

no other mac lurking around, i took the drive to a friends but typically their firewire wasn't working so that experiment ended there

i'll look into getting a copy of datarescue and another hard drive (maybe not lacie this time). it would be fruitless though if its my computer that is at fault, i'd like to know what might have gone wrong before investing in programs and drives.

this is a great site, it's good to see such sharing of knowledge - technology facilitated alturism!

Hi there and welcome !

Maybe a trip to the local Apple store and see what happens if they plug the drive into one of their Macs. That will then prove/disprove whether it's your Mac that's at fault.

How old is the drive ?

the drives only a year old
my computer is about 6 years old now
i don't think my local mac store will be overly sympathetic (tottenham coart road) but i shall be pro active and follow your advice in the next few days nevertheless.
cheers

you may want to think in investing in a newer one a imac G4 forinstance or even a G5
it could be your mac but im not too sure about that

i'm sorry, i'm hopeless, i have another question;

the external drive is listed in disk utility (but doesn't appear on the desktop)
i notice it says that its not mounted...
if i click on mount is there a chance that all the data get deleted?

cheers for all the replies above, rachel

just incase anyone else find themselves somewhere similar i think i found the cause of my problem....

The Porsche line of drives ships out formatted FAT32 for PC. Some, but not all, versions of the Mac OS will mount all sizes of FAT32 formatted drives. OS 10.1.x and 10.2.x may have problems mounting a FAT32 formatted drive that is larger than 127GB.

... which i think lacie should have been clearer about, grr
