hi all

here's what disk utility says about my external hardrive (which by the way, my wife's powerbook can see and read just fine!) "canoe" is the harddrive's name.

Repairing disk for “canoe”
Mounting Disk(S,"Checking HFS Plus volume.",0)
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Incorrect block count for file .DS_Store
(It should be 6 instead of 4)
Keys out of order
Rebuilding Catalog B-tree.
The volume canoe could not be repaired.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)

Repair attempted on 1 volume
0 HFS volumes repaired
1 volume could not be repaired

thanks for any help

Hi there and welcome !

Unfortunately Apple's Disk Utility doesn't fixmany problems...

Get yourself a copy of Disk Warrior, this will fix it.

The only other option to try...

If your Wifes Mac can see the drive, can you copy all the data off it, then reformat the drive and copy all the data back on.

I am having a similar problem. I have just moved an external firewire drive (full of work!!) to inside the box (it's set to slave and all that) It showed up and worked fine, then for some reason i ran disk utility on it, and got this:

Invalid volume free block count
(It should be 11444494 instead of 11435406)

I repaired, and now while the disk shows up in disk utility, i cannot get the volume to mount on the desktop. I have tried running disk warrior, but alas, to no avail. If all else fails i can retrieve the data bit by bit with Data Recue, but was just wondering if there was an easier way?

Thanks,
Matt.
