While using multiple applications (such as Safari and Microsoft Word) or attempting to download, I have been getting error messages informing me that I don't have enough free disk space (Finder says I have about 46 GB available). To solve this problem (which started after installing a torrent and downloading a significant amount of items), I attempted to delete them, but I keep on receiving error message 50 when emptying my trash. I am unable to move items to or from the trash, and the ones currently in there will not be deleted. I cannot download software to help me with this problem as I do not have enough space, but I cannot wipe my hard drive as I do not have the OS X (Macbook Pro 10.5.8) installation CD available. What do I do?

start with a full restart then holding down the option key, empty trash.

I don't think this has anything to do with the Disk space.
