I have a bunch of jpgs in my trash. When I try to empty my trash can I get a message saying- operation cannot be completed because item is in use.

Hello, and welcome to mac-help.com!

Go to the menu under the apple and select "Force Quit." Quit everything listed except the finder, and then the items will no longer be in use, and you should be able to empty the trash.

I just realized you might lose changes on documents this way, if that's an issue just go to the application(s) then save and quit, and then you can empty the trash.
