Battery/Airport Status Help! (ibook G4)

Ive been having ALOT of problems with my ibook g4 recently, mostly with the battery. On monday I was going to the local retail store to buy a new battery, but today I was not able to connect to the internet. Now, neither the battery level or the airport status is showing in the top right hand corner in the toolbar. The only thing that appears is the spinning wheel when I move the mouse up there. Any suggestions?
