aspell (command line)

Discussion in 'Misc' started by Hans Georg Schaathun, Oct 6, 2011.

  1. Hi,

    does anyone here run aspell on the command line on mac os x?

    I wonder what the best way to install it is. Most of the google
    hits concern cocoAspell, which I am not quite prepared to learn
    at the minute.

    So far, I have used brew to install aspell, something which
    went smoothly. The problem is, I cannot find the dictionaries
    (Norwegian ones in particular). If I have to, I guess I can
    find a source distribution and figure out where and how to install,
    but I don't think it should be that cumbersome on a modern OS,
    especially one with a reputation for being user friendly :)

    Does anyone have a hint or an experience to share?

    Thanks a lot in advance,

    I installed aspell via Fink.sf.net, but you could most likely use
    MacPorts.org as well.

    I have it in /usr/local/bin, which means I probably compiled it myself.
    It can't be that difficult, then.

    I guess You could to try to install some dictionaries on top of what You
    already have installed.

    <http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/dict/nn/>
    <http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/dict/nb/>

    Use the same procedure on all dicts:
    cd <decompressed folder>
    ../configure
    make
    make install

    ....and testing after installation:

    aspell dump dicts

    Thanks a lot. That was reasonably straight forward.
    I'll wait for an opportunity to test the Norwegian dictionary,
    but the 'british' one which I installed in the same way
    does work.

    Also thanks to those whose suggestions I did not test.
