The Photos Share function to Facebook and Twitter disappeared with Mojave, I believe.

    Video won't play

Which version of Safari are you using? Version 14 is the latest, but only for Mojave onwards. Version 10 is the latest for Yosemite. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safari_version_history#Safari_14 Have you tried another browser? Firefox or Chrome?

    Why upgrade

If you are happy as you are(as I am with my mid 2012 MBP and Mojave), stay as you are. 32 bit apps won't run on Catalina as it's 64 bit. I have a few 32 bit apps that I use, so I'm staying with Mojave. Yes I found that with my old White MacBook. Upgraded an OS too far, so went back.

    Bonehead Video Question

OK, but I think that they are designed to operate to send a signal from a computer via the adaptor and HDMI cable to a device rather than the opposite way round. But, I could be wrong.

    Bonehead Video Question

As with most, if not all streaming devices, I'm guessing that the device is designed to connect to a TV via HDMI, so won't work using USB(how were you thinking of converting it to USB?) and a computer.

It's not an option on a Mac, as far as I know.

Sharing big video files over the internet

Perhaps this might work, you and your sister could access each others Mac and you could both have a specific folder for the files that you want to share. https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/mac-help/mchlp1066/10.15/mac/10.15

Sharing big video files over the internet

I'm sure you could do it through Apple ID, but I've never used it like that. You could try Dropbox. You upload a video to Dropbox and then email her a weblink. She can watch the video online or download if she wishes. If she creates a Dropbox account as well, you view her files. Other sharing...
