While reading a link posted in FB, had annoying ad with "x" in the corner that indicated it could be closed I thought, but instead started opening up another page and then a pop up ("you've won a prize!") with no way of closing it except clicking on the "OK" button. Tried closing and restarting Safari, logging out and logging back in, and restarting entire computer - still comes up. Cannot get to Safari preferences. Any ideas for me?

You need to download two excellent free programs. One is called AdwareMedic, and it gets rid of annoying ads, pop ups, etc. while you are browsing. You can get it from here:

The other one is a virus checker/removal program called ClamXav. You can get it from here:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15850/clamxav
One other thing to check is to see whether or not you have MacKeeper on your machine. That problematic program causes more headaches. Look in your Applications folder. If it's there, let us know and we'll tell you how to completely remove it.
