Ruined 2012 Macbook Pro by downloading El Capitan OS

I recently resurrected a neglected Macbook Pro and attempted to update the OS. Installing El Capitan not only failed but my laptop will no longer boot up. I can access Disk Utility but I can no longer install my original OS - the only option it gives me is installing El Capitan, which obviously fails every single time. I'm currently attempting to force my laptop to boot from Maverick on a USB but this has yet to be successful. As of now my laptop is constantly restarting, with a list of various error messages appearing. Is my laptop completely destroyed?

Did you make a backup to an external device before upgrading?
