Question marks for images?

Hi all, a fairly new user to Macs ( MacBook Air) but not to computers in general.

Over the past couple of days have had some strange issues. As per thread title pictures are showing as the blue question mark. I thought it was just in my mail app but actually as per pic attached , i also have the problem in App Store?!
I have not made any changes to Mac apart from trying different mail apps as i thought that was the issue. I have tried the built in mail app, Airmail2 and all have the same issue.
Interestingly (or maybe not!), when i go to my mail in Chrome browser, pics are appearing fine. Pics in Chrome per se on websites are appearing OK too.
Any help/ suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

-Have you tried repairing disk permissions?

OK...

I would try creating another user on your Mac, login to it and see if the issue persists. If so, the next step would be a reinstall of Yosemite over the top of your current install.

Do you have a current Time Machine or other backup of your data?

I don't have a backup ( I know i should have!), presumably reinstalling will wipe all my data?

weird was just reading about adding a user and thought i'd just take a look again and all seems fine again?!
