Opening up Nikon Transfer

Will someone tell me how to open up the above so that it appears on desktop when I insert a memory card into a card reader.
I am using 10.8.5.

does the program launch okay without any memory card inserted?

If so, what happens when a memory card is inserted while Nikon Transfer is already running

The answer for the first question is yes, and when I insert the memory card the images are imported, so the answers are yes and yes.
