iMessages: How to set up?

Hi all!
For some reason I can't send texts from my computer to some recipients (non mac/iPhone users). I used to be able to and now it won't let me. Two of my email addresses keep popping up prompting me to enter passwords. I know I have entered the correct passwords, and I don't know how to alter the user names? I don't even know if I have an aol account? Please help me?

1. Go to System Preferences
2. Go to Internet Accounts
3. Select your account from the left hand box
4. Make sure Messages box is ticked

The messages box is checked already. I can use messages with other iPhones, I just can't do it with non-iPhone users. When it changed so that we were now able to iMessage to anyone (not just iPhoners) I could do it. I don't know what happened, now I can't? Any other suggestions? Thank you so much!
