I have given my wife my old I pad 1 in an act of unparalleled generosity. Trouble is when she goes onto certain websites like the daily mail it just crashes. This is happening on flipboard as well. Please help as I don't want to share my air.

Most iPad crashes come down to one simple thing lack of memory (not to be confused with storage). but the iPad 1 has only half the memory (256MB) of the iPad 2 (512MB). And if your running ISO 5 this makes the original iPad 1 more prone to crashing as its resource are quickly consumed.
Try adjusting the setting down on some of the latest features such as the following.
Notification centre.
Spotlight indexing.
iCloud only use what she needs etc.
