HELP! Greyed out /users folder on osX 10.9.5

My /users folder is grayed out and both the creation date and modified date are set to "1/24/84". I am not able to open it from any finder windows and sometimes I can get into it from terminal or the "go to" action. I've been trying to figure out how to fix this but I've come up short. Please help, thanks.

This is not good.
Have you done a full restart?
Have you got a full backup?
