G4 Ibook "You need to restart your computer" message

Hi,
I'm getting this message every time I try to start my ibook. Can't get past it.
Suspect harddisc is nearly full.

Any suggesstions appreciated.:confused:

Hi there and welcome !

First try and boot into single user mode...

You can start up the Mac and hold down the command + s keys...untill you get to a "prompt"

Then type

/sbin/fsck -fy

then press return

This will manually run FSCK...then once it has finished (it may take a while) type

reboot

and press return.

If it still gives the same messages then boot into Single User Mode, mount the drive and delete a few files...I'll explain this later if you are not sure how to do it...

Hi Ric,

Just tried that and it scrolls down to the message
"panic:we are hanging here..."
after Kernel Version.

The prompt is frozen, I can't type anything.

I've also tried repairing with the disc utility through the system disc.
It says there is a defective volume due a "leaf count of 473 when it should be 1":(
