Did the range of screen resolutions offered with Mavericks change from previous operating systems?

I recently upgraded my Mac Book Pro to the Mavericks OS. I use an old external monitor, and am unable to set the screen resolution so as to fill the entire screen. This was not a problem when I used the Snow Leopard OS. Is it possible that Apple changed the range of possible screen resolution setting available in Mavericks? If so, is there any way to get the old ones back? I don't want to buy a new monitor if I don't have to.

Hi,

-What brand/model is the external monitor?
-Which model MacBook Pro and type of video connection?
-What resolution are you trying to enable?
