I've just got a new iMac and operating system (Mavericks 10.9.5 "updated" from the pre-installed Yosemite and I am regularly switching between my wife's login section and my own.
When I switch, the desktop background (Mac installed picture) does not fill the screen and the dock also sits at the bottom of the smaller picture.
Icons on the desktop do remain where I put them on the grey background.

Eventually, the dock fills the screen and if I switch back to the login screen and then back to me, the picture covers the whole desktop.

It's not critical, but it's damn irritating! Any fixes out there?

Hello and welcome.

The desktop picture is customizable per user on a Mac. The resolution of the display is machine-wide.

-Have you tried changing the settings in  > System Preferences... > Desktop & Screen Saver, Display, and Dock?

OK.

Try resetting the PRAM/NVRAM of the Mac:

How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac

And, repairing disk permissions:

-Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
-Click once on Macintosh HD in list on left
-Click Repair Disk Permissions button
-Restart when it is complete

Let us know if those help the issue.

OK...thanks for trying.

Maybe we could get you to take/post photos of the two different users, so we know exactly what we are dealing with?

Let us know if that is possible and/or of you need assistance.
