Desktop Icons Missing / Blue screen

I was given a older Mac running OS X 10.6.8. My desktop has gone all blue and all of the icons are missing. I am able to boot into safe mode and see everything but nothing in the normal startup. I am not very tech savvy so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry we didn't get back to you sooner.

Two things to try:

-Repair disk permissions using Disk Utility
-Safe boot and create another user and see if it logs in normally
