Looked for this in the forum and could not find anything. After 3 hours and a whole lot of prayer, problem solved. Desktop MAC G4 - Quicksliver - OS 9 and OS X have boot-able partitions on the hard drive.

I had removed the Mother Board to replace the plastic locking mechanism and reinstalled it. At first I thought that I had damaged the Mother Board or Processor Board when I took it out or put it in. Not so. The problem was a dead battery on the Mother Board.

Here is what I found.

1. When I held the "9" key down, the computer did not shut down on its own during the boot process. Does anyone know why? Could not find out what this does
2. Once the machine booted it gave me a date and time error.
3. Set date and time.
4. Rebooted machine with the same outcome - it showed the grey screen with the Apple and shut itself down.
5. Repeated steps 1-3. with same outcome.
6. Reset the PRAM with the button on the Mother Board next to the battery.
7. Repeated steps 1-3 with same outcome.
8. Got out my trusty Multi-Volt- Meter. Sure enough the battery was dead.
9. Replaced battery
10 Reset the PRAM
11 Repeated steps 1-3.
12 Rebooted machine and it works.

This is the first time that I have had a dead battery shut down a machine.
