crashed hard drive from old Mac

One tech told me that it was "done" and that there was no way to retrieve my data. Just need
to find out for sure as I had lots of photos, docs and artwork on the drive. Anyone know?

Yes, I would say he is right, unless you use spotlight search to try and find them.
Other than that there is no cure

You can try and use a program called Disk Warrior and see if it can "repair" the drive. This link contains information about the program, which costs about $120 to $125 US:
