Cannot access Outlook

Hello,

I can't get into my Hotmail account. The message I get is "Safari can't verify the identity of the website "login.live.com". When I proceed anyway, Safari freezes. (I also get the same type of certificate message when trying to connect to Estensions.apple.com!!)

I have Safari v. 5.0.1 (5533.223) and OSX v 10.5.8, both of which are said to be up to date.

It is hard for me to understand why I cannot access a website that is accessed millions of times daily by other users.

Can anyone explain how to fix this problem?

I rarely use Safari (Firefox is my primary browser), and I am on Mavericks, OS 10.9.5, and the latest version of Safari, V 7.1. But, I just tried going to login.live.com with Safari, and it worked.

When I typed in "Safari can't verify the identity of the website "login.live.com"" via a google search, here is one useful "hit" I got:
