External HD Help .Plz

Hi I let my WD external Hard disc to a friend vista to copy things,we did it before with his very same hard disk with no problem.When I got it back,it recognize it with 930gb used but couldnt see the files and strange file names as !@£@$, and when i plug it the second,it appeared complete empty the 1 tb.I thing he used a diagnostic thing for errors,he doesnt say and refuse to accept it.I download data rescue II but didnt try hoping for advice.I thought there might be a way to use a time machine and put it as in the happy times(All my data)I am almost weeping, Please help.
