General Monitor Questions

My current 17" CRT monitor is showing signs of failure (Blink/flash and
sometimes the blue gun cuts out for a second or so).

I know that LCD monitors are becoming much more popular and much
cheaper than they used to be. They used to have poor color
reproduction. How good is the color reproduction on current LCD
monitors?

How much variation in color do you see between different monitors?
Apple is normally high quality, but I can get two Viewsonic 17"
displays for the cost of one Apple Studio 20" display.

depends on what you need the color for. If you are a graphics
person preparing professional work for print publication, then
color is very important. If you just want a colorful experience
surfing the web and pictures that look good enough, then LCD
monitors are fine.

I use a laptop at home, so by definition I'm using an LCD. At
work I have a pair of 18" LCDs attached to my PowerMac G5 (one is
an NEC and the other a Compaq). Both do the job I need them for.

Go to a CompUSA, BestBuy, CircuitCity, etc... and look at some of
the LCD monitors. Browse http://dealmac.com and see what some of
the 19" monitors are going for.
