Dial up modem with an acoustic coupler? I don't think so.

I was thinking more about reading newspapers on line.

I'm already there in that I read The NewYork Times, USA Today, The Austin
American-Statesman each day online. I quite some time ago gave up having
newspapers delivered as it was quicker and cheaper to read the online
versions.

And many others. Even a teeny little northern California
four-page weekly that I encountered has an online edition.

A UNIX signature isn't a return address, it's the ASCII equivalent
of a black velvet clown painting. It's a rectangle of carets
surrounding a quote from a literary giant of weeniedom like
Heinlein or Dr. Who.

Ha, ha, Dr. ..... Who's Chris Maeda?

What "industry" are you talking about?

I keep forgetting that irony and sarcasm don't come across very well in
this medium. *sigh*

1. Re the old technologies: the video was labeled 1981. I guess the real
question is: Is this another one of those things that is perpetually just 5
years away? Like nuclear fusion power, always just 10 years off.

2. Just a month ago, with no prior warning (AFAIK), PC Magazine gave me the
options of going digital, subscribing to another paper magazine, or getting
a refund of my remaining subscription. I had just renewed a few weeks
before :-(

BTW, I decided to try the on-line continuation...Evidence of my
doltishness, I guess :-)

And shame on me for not catching the irony and sarcasm until I made my
posting -- *sigh* in return. :-(

That was the speed to read back in the days of the C= Vic-20, TRS-80
Models 1&2, the C=8296, and was that a CoCo I saw in a few shots? Pity,
no Apple ][ family, Atari 400/800 or Osbornes.

And to someone else in this thread, self dial, coupler free modems were
still a VERY expensive toy ($3000+) in 1981. The first consumer 1200's
in 1982 were still over $1000. Couplers had been 110 baud, and 300 baud
was just out and still pricey as it was.
