Evernote for Mac?

Just saw a plug for "Evernote" on one of Apple's web pages. Looks
potentially interesting, and free -- but what's the catch? (in the
spirit of "no such thing as a free lunch").

Does your content get presented back to you with added advertisements?
Your email address sold to spammers? Who's giving this away? And why?

This is just one of thousands of apps on the iTunes store that are free.
There is no chance of being sold to spammers unless you think Apple is
doing this in the first place.

Sometimes the lunch is free but you have to pay for the beers.

Since you mentioned it and it looks like an app I can use I just
downloaded it.

Checking the download page I see that 1649 people have given this app a
5 star ratting for the current version.

Wow, I've never had evernote delete anything. I sync between MacBook,
iPhone & iPad. Update on any and it replicates to all. I hadn't really
thought of the TimeMachine problem but you can export everything to
HTML files on disk (File->Export) and that would get backed up.

For PDF's, I sync them via iBooks on iPhone & iPad and iTunes on the Mac

Jeepers. The only problem I have with Evernote is when a note gets magically
changed to Rich Text and can only be edited on the Mac. I'd love to find a
way to lock a note as "Just Text Always"

As far as I can tell, they offer the free version only to
try to convince you to pay up for the non-free version.

In the desktop app, you'll have to see an ad (neatly kept
in a box on the bottom left of the window).

In the iPad and iPhone versions, no ads to see at all.

Really? I use the free version and have had no problems
dumping lots of PDFs in there. Moreover, I even frequently
use print-to-PDF/Evernote directly in print dialog boxes.

My biggest gripe with it is the way it handles encrypted notes.

If EverNote got HIPAA compliant, they'd make a fortune, I think.

I got DevonThink as part of a bundle but really haven't put
the time into having a feel for it. Looks like it could be
very useful, but for the moment, it's on the back burner.

I use Evernote all the time, however.

The "catch" with quite a few of the free apps (Dropbox and Spideroak are
others) is that they are hoping that you will use it enough that you
exceed the free limit, and would decide to go for the paid version which
allows more space (you would get warned if you reach the limit, you
would not face an automatic charge).

There is really no catch. If you want to use it for free then there is
an unobtrusive ad and some features are reduced. I have been paying for
Evernote for some time and find it indispensible. Snap someone's
business card on my phone and upload to Evernote where it gets scanned
and OCR'd. I can then search for the name on the card and retrieve the
information. Capture web pages and build a searchable and shareable
resource. There are very many uses for Evernote and I use it alongside
Devonthink Pro Office using scripts to get info I have captured to
Evernote into Devonthink.

See this page for ideas:
